Heart Aerospace completes first flight of the world's largest electric aircraft

Heart Aerospace has reached a major milestone on the path to commercial electric aviation by successfully completing the first flight of its X1 demonstrator: the largest battery-electric aircraft ever to take to the skies.

The piloted test flight took place at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York and demonstrated all-electric flight at a scale relevant to commercial airline operations. With a wingspan of 106 feet and a takeoff weight exceeding 25,000 pounds, the X1 represents a significant step toward Heart's ES-30, a 30-seat hybrid-electric regional aircraft targeted to enter service in 2031.

The milestone validates key technologies that will underpin the ES-30, which has already attracted orders and options from airlines including United Airlines, Air Canada and JSX. According to Heart, the aircraft is designed to reduce operating costs by more than 40% compared with today's regional aircraft through lower energy costs, simplified electric propulsion and a software-defined architecture.

The first flight also highlighted the economic potential of electric aviation. Powered entirely by batteries, the aircraft completed its maiden flight using roughly $5 worth of electricity, based on electricity costs in upstate New York, demonstrating how electrification could fundamentally reshape airline economics.
